I've been getting more into gardening since I put in a pond. I plan on making an 8' x 8' section of my backyard all coneflowers and black eyed susans and I was wondering how to go about this from seed.

I know the packets say plant in fall but I have very little experience with seeds, and no experience with seeds that have to be planted in fall. I want to see what you guys have to say. All of my other seeds were started indoors in Spring. So I would love some input on the best way to do this.

Hi JBtheExplorer - yes that is correct - the seeds for both are generally sown in the autumn.

As both Echinacea and Rudbeckia are perennials and the majority of perennial seeds are what are known as cold germinators - meaning the seeds need to go through a cold spell in order to break their dormancy - they are all generally sown outdoors somewhere between autumn and late winter.

They are both very easy to grow from seed and normally germinate relatively quickly - if sown at the right time of year :)
