Just read through the first page of this thread again. I'd forgotten all about this when I got around to my strawberries. I had them in hanging baskets for two years with coco fiber mulch until someone sprayed for weeds (against my wishes) and killed them - yes I said they were hanging...

When I started using wood chip mulch I found the improvement amazing. I use to cultivate to keep the soil loose etc. With mulch such is not necessary. I have 2000 square feet and put ten yards of wood chips on the surface starting about 1 June in Zone 5. Now, I would not garden in my area without mulch. A ten yard load is dumped on the driveway and is transported by wheelbarrow to the garden. This is about 70 wheelbarrows Cost is $10.00 per yard, plus $35.00 delivery charges.
