Hi all, I randomly received a number of grape vine cuttings, allegedly black cotton candy grapes? I know nothing about them except that I have them and so far they look healthy.

Don’t mind the scribbles, I’m too aware of google maps hunting and figure I don’t want my neighborhood ID’d
:stuck_out_tongue:

Anyway, they don’t have roots yet, but my source informed me that I just needed to keep them in deep water, and/or put them in deep soil, exposing only two or three upper buds. Then water in the morning and evening, and keep them in part sun part shade since they’re still tender.

I feel like I’m missing information. Do I wait for roots to form in the water? Do I just trust they’ll root in soil? Do I need anything extra? In fact, what am I even doing??? All advice accepted!

Thanks!

Well this can vary on how you do it depending on if you are in western dry climate or back east. If you are back east they can just put stuff in the ground and get it to work. But here in 1 of the driest states in the union, if we put stuff in the ground without it being established then it'll die. So doing that part of it depends on the state of your ground water levels and how moist the soil is. (Is your soil moist or dry?)

Also, the real issue in other aspects of this is you don't want to change the water everyday when you do cuttings. if you do it disturbs the chemicals trying to form and grow roots in the jar with the cuttings.

You still change the water once in awhile. Like don't let it grow stinky or grow crap in there.

What I'm saying is, you have to both change the water and not change the water in there. Changing it too soon will mess it up. But don't let infection and sickness get in the water from not changing it. I've messed up some cuttings in the past by changing the water too quickly.

You're experimenting. You can do both - edging your bets as it were. Try putting half of them in pots with good potting soil. Keep them damp and on that sunny windowsill.
