Crane flies

Hi, I was discussing gardens with a friend, and she mentioned 'Crane Flies' which I had never heard of and said they were absolutely killing her grass. When she pointed them out to me I realized I had dozens and dozens of the same thing in my yard all summer and especially in August. Is this something to worry about? What is the effect that they can have on lawns. What about gardens?
