I live in texas and our winters are rather mild overall and i wonder if there are certain herbs that you can keep alive in pots outside. I have a patio where i can keep them from getting windblown but no way to control temperature. Any suggestions and info appreciated.

I'm in Michigan where the winters are anything BUT mild.
But I've had potted oregano and rosemary come back after five months encased in ice and snow (even though they are not perennials in this climate), and mint comes back aggressively every year as a perennial. Does it get below freezing where you live? If not I imagine just about anything will grow year-around, especially if it's under a roof or something where it's protected from frost.

For non-tropical countries, I have read in an article that herbs are best planted in plastic pots so it can be placed to a suitable location. Like in winter, it can be indoor although I'm sure it would also need sunlight. And during the summer heat, it can stay indoor after 8 in the morning and be out again after 8 in the evening. Herbs will die when there is snow.

I come from Texas, lived both in el paso and Houston area. I could manage to keep potted mint alive throughout the winter ;) I could even keep alive a calla lily this last winter! Right in the other side of the border! I think oregano and mint definitely stand a chance during winter. Same for bay and lavender.

I think mint and chive are the best herbs to keep over the mild winter you have there! My chive is in pot and it lasted until December, and the first herb to come up in spring too.
