I found this on Wikipedia......

The name is not derived from the drink, but from the old Anglo-Saxon word "bearu" ("grove"), referring to the original forestation that surrounded the town.

Thanks for that! like everyone else I thought @zigs was posting about his latest jaunt down to the pub ;-) Then the thought of a town named Beer had me wondering about the story that had to be behind the name. Might be an interesting place to visit and have a beer!

I have had a beer there :D Needed some Beer Stone to carve a window, the quarry only sells it by the metre cubed, so went down the pub and asked about, bought some off the Vicar :)

Dare I ask Zigs! You bought some off the vicar, what's that all about? :D Why do you need beer stone to carve a window?

The Vicar had a stash of it, he had lumps of it, round the back.

Needed to carve a candle window in the local stone for a cottage that I was working on nearby :)

I'm not getting this, doh! What would a vicar want with it? I'm beginning to think there's some weird goings on in Dorset!

What wouldn't a Vicar want with it? Obviously it comes in handy. Perhaps there's been some left over from a project at the Vicarage. In any case, it was fortunate for @zigs that he had it!

Yep, the Vicar tends a few churches in the area, you never know when you're gonna need local stone for repairs.

We've even been know to open up disused quarries for stone when working on churches.

I had to search the Net to find out why 'Beer" and found this

Suffice it to say however that those pictures do show the photographer's passion for photography (n)

Pray tell, when you say carve a window, is that a window for a structure? I really need to find a book "ancient architecture for dummies" ...

Yep, don't have a picture of it, but basically a carved stone surround with glass set into it :)

I too was intrigued by the title, now I know I was deceived lol! What a lovely harbor town. I really like the name too. Is this an industry fishing town?
