The plants known horticulturally as Asters are now placed in several genera in the Aster Tribe (Astereae) of the Daisy Family (Asteraceae). The more horticulturally important perennial genera are Aster, Doellingeria, Eurybia, and Symphyotrichum.

In addition, there are also the annual China-asters (Callistephus chinensis), as shown in posts #7, 8, and 9.

Symphyotrichum x 'Bill's Big Blue' is a robust aster of generous proportions. It is popular in the western U.S. and elsewhere. This aster is of unknown hybrid parentage, or possibly even a species. It was originally introduced by California nurseryman, Ed Carman.

A gentleman inquired: Are Asters an annual or a perennial?
