I am in zone 6. The temperatures are now starting on their slow decline to winter. Can I begin composting now? Does composting continue through winter?

Yes, but expect a slower composting process at lower temperatures. According to science, beneficial bacteria can still be active in compost at temps as low as 28 deg F. "active" but very slowly acting.

Sound good.

What happens when it gets to 0 degrees f or cooler, which probably will happen for me in zone 6.

Nothing, but it will restart as the temp goes up. I use a black plastic composter which warms in the sun and speeds things a bit in winter.

Great time to start. Lots of greens and browns readily available. Build your pile and let it start cooking. As the weather turns colder wet the pile down and cover it. It should provide it's own heat for some time. Wet it again later if you think it need it.

Hooray for composting. I've been making compost piles and using compost bins since age 17. (A long time, i.e.) I get nervous/quite anxious, when I see people tossing their kitchen scraps into the trash.
@toolmania1: Go for it. All year round.
