Another common name for Graptophyllum pictum is Caricature Plant because the irregular white blotch on each leaf can sometimes resemble a comical or grotesque silhouette of a face in profile.

The genus Graptophyllum, in the Acanthus Family (Acanthaceae), consists of fifteen species, distributed in New Guinea (3 spp), Queensland (5 spp.), New Caledonia (3 spp.), Fiji & Tonga (3 spp.), and one species found quite disjunctly in western equatorial Africa (G. glandulosum).
