I’m not sure if my icebox watermelons are ripe, and I want to be completely sure before picking so I don’t waste any. They’re a dark green variety. The ground spot is yellow, they sound kind of hollow when thumped, the closest tendril to the vine where the watermelon is attached is dead…Are they ready? How long, once they’re ready, will it take them to spoil if left on the vine?

When the bottoms turn yellow they are ready to pick in my book. You can wait until the stem falls off but it may be too watery.

What color is a ripe watermelon?
yellow

If it is ripe, the color should be a creamy, almost butter-like yellow. The bigger the yellow belly and the creamier the color means the more time the melon spent ripening on the vine. However, if the spot is smaller or looks more white than yellow, then the melon may not be as ripe. Google
