I have put my house plants in vases of water, but they don't grow like if they were in dirt. How do I make them grow? How do I keep the algae out also?

Not all house plants can be grown in water, I'm afraid. What exactly do you grow?
As for the algae, I think that you should change the water from time to time, maybe it will help.

Maybe you could take a picture of your plant and post it here? I'm sure someone will be able to identify it:) Personally, I'm just a beginner and I have a lot to learn, but many people in this forum are gardening experts:)

The science of growing plants in water is called Hydroponics. As it was indicated, not all plants can be grown successful by this method and some might be more resilient than others. Having said that though, most plants can be grown using this method, subject that you know what you are doing.

Since you did not mention what type of plants you have, it is difficult to analyse the problem. Still, I have some suggestions.

First, since you are new in this area I recommend starting out with plants that actually do grown in water successfully. Plants such as Cyperus and Spathiphyllum are very good candidates.

Secondly, it is vital that you put the mentioned vases in an opaque container so that light is blocked out. This way you stop the water turning green.

Lastly, make it a habit to change the water. Keep in mind, that topping water only, won't remove toxins and salt built up.

If you follow these few tips I am hopeful you will be more successful in growing plants in water.
