Cut flowers for inside the house were important in the Victorian garden. Azaleas, carnations, daisies, geraniums, roses, ferns, and lily of the valley were popular for this purpose.

In 1845, The Illustrated London News published an account of a Christmas Eve celebration held at the Temperance Hall by the London Mission Society for about 400 children. The tree was loaded with fruits and flowers and little presents. It was illuminated with many candles.
