Sarcoccoca is actually a very hardy, adaptable and tough plant. I grow it in the shade and in the sun ....it does very well in the shade. It is not an esp attractive plant.....like a privet to look at but it is that scent; it will fill the garden in mid winter. 
Here the flowers are already opening out....an indispensable shrub I think
Regarding its hardyness,like many plants it is the first winter that is prob the difficulty. Fleece it in cold weather but in future years it should be fine
