I could use some advice on how to train a climbing rose to go up a column. I am hoping to get one rose going on my front porch (see photo) and two roses on the back deck. Do I need to make a wire structure, painted to match the column, for the rose to attach to? I have the roses growing in containers. Thanks for any advice.

Remember you don't want to put your rose anywhere that the thorns can stick you accidentally. Its best to keep ramblers away from any path that people use.

You can get a trellis from any garden center. There are so many different types and sizes to choose from. They do need support and you may can find other ways, but garden trellis's are the best because you can tie more than one cane per trellis.

Thanks for the tip. Perhaps I should choose another climbing plant for the column in the front, since it is close to the handrail. The one in the back is well out of the path of travel. You recommend a trellis from a garden center, but I'm thinking I might have to build one to make it fit on the post. I did see a tip online about making a trellis from metal mesh or ladder mesh from the hardware store. I could paint that to match the post.
