In 1967, Nevada chose the most abundant plant in the state to be its State Flower: Great Basin Sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata).
Though Sagebrush's wind-pollinated flowers are small; its wild, silvery grace perfectly evokes the vast, often desolate, beauty of the high desert plains.

In 1957, Indiana switched its State flower from the annual daisy, Zinnia (Zinnia elegans) to the perennial Peony (Paeonia).
Both are beautiful garden flowers, but neither is native to Indiana. Overall, only a lateral move. The current titleholder is pictured.

In 1923, the Hawthorne (Crataegus) was selected as the State Flower of Missouri, the Show Me State.
Different sources list the exact identity of the symbol as either Dotted Hawthorne (Crataegus punctata), Downy Hawthorne (Crataegus mollis), or any white-petaled member of the genus. Crataegus punctata is pictured below.
