I planted this avocado tree in early May and it is growing lots of leaves, but on the lower half. Not sure if I should let it continue to do so until it is well rooted or prune now to force more growth to the top.

Thoughts?

Don't prune anything. Let the tree establish its root system. You start cutting on the plant and for every green part you remove you are diminishing photosynthesis and root growth. Wait until the plant is well established.
