I live in Hawaii in a zone 12b but someone recommended the Podocarpus macrophyllus var. maki, Shrubby Yew-pine, to me for a hedge. Most websites say they are for climate zones roughly 7-10 with one site saying zones 4-24. What would be the effects of a warmer climate zone like 12b? Some locals here say all grows more here in Hawaii bc of the heat, but I would think it would grow less if it’s outside it’s primary zone. I’m in a 12b with lots of wind. Any input on how it will grow and what max height and thickness would be, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Try one and see if it works out ok. I wouldn't spend a lot of money on plants I wasn't sure about. Look at the locals and see what does best in their yards for the best choices. However, if you don't mind spending money then plant as many as you can afford.
