"plant trees in the fall" but when

So when is the right time in "the fall" to plant a tree into a landscape? How many weeks back from first frost should I count for transplanting it?

I am wanting to plant an expensive bloodgood Japanese red maple and don't want to burn the cost of the tree having it die soonly.

After it goes dormant is the best time and if you can't do that, as soon in the spring as the soil can be worked.

japanese Maple grows best in moderately acid to slightly acid soil ranging from 5.5 to 6.5 on the pH scale. Make sure the soil matches the plant's pH before planting in the fall. I would plant in early fall so the roots can still grow a little before Winter.
