Hi all. We planted seven trees on our property today and we are excited to see how they do. We planted two Northern Red Oak trees, a Bald Cypress, a wild plum tree (forgot the exact species), a Nuttal Oak, and a couple Red Mulberry trees. We really hope they'll take hold because our property (most of it) consists of very hard and compacted clay. It's very moist but its still clay. I was able to find some better soil in one area of our yard so I was able to at least fill in the planting holes with better soil. Here's hoping!!

That's wonderful that you've plant a variety of native species on your land. Many plants will adapt well to clay soils. Certainly local natives already known to grow in such soil are very likely to succeed. One school of thought doesn't recommend any amendment for tree plantings. However the regular addition addition of organic matter, often as mulch, will benefit the friability and fertility of any soil.
