Perennial plus annual

After cutting back perennial in a tub can you plant some annuals till the perennial comes back later ?

Yes, as long as you don’t disturb the roots too much.

Pretty soon you will be coming to the season to plant fall bulbs, at least in my zone it's coming up soon. Bulbs would only take up a little space around the outside edges. Hardy Cyclamen are one that doesn't take up much room and they have pretty white, pink or red flowers.
