A lovely perennial wildflower native to North America, commonly called beard tongue because the sterile stamen has a tuft of small hairs.

What a fine example of macrophotography. Both the golden trichomes on the staminode and the clear glandular trichomes on the exterior of the corolla are well-shown.

The Foxglove Beardtongue (Penstemon digitalis), in the Plantain Family (Plantaginaceae), is a beautiful perennial wildflower native to the central United States.

The cultivar Penstemon digitalis 'Husker Red' is a form with additional red pigments infused in the leaves and stems, giving its foliage a rich burgundy tone. The fine garden plant was honored as Perennial Plant of the Year in 1996, by the Perennial Plant Association.

I appreciate the comment Marck. I was quite taken with the beauty of these wildflowers, which had randomly appeared amid the undergrowth surrounding a line of Norway Spruce trees. It was interesting to learn a bit about the Penstemon digitalis 'Husker Red' cultivar, it does have a beautiful burgundy tone. Thanks for providing the information about it!
