I recently attempted to divide and transplant a japanese painted fern, but tried too late after the plant remerged and they still look limp and not healthy. However, when i went to dig them up there appears to be evidence of really small new frond growth near the roots. If I cut off all the old fronds, will this induce the plant to produce new growth at this time of the year?

Hello, and welcome to the Forums.

Yes, Japanese Painted Fern (Athyrium niponicum) will continue to put out new fronds throughout the growing season. If the old fronds are completely dead and wilted, do remove them, but keep fronds that are still alive, even if damaged, since they will help feed the plant and give it more energy to produce new fronds faster. If only the frond tips are dead, only cut off the tips.
