I re- checked all the boxes I saw appropriate so maybe I accidentally got something right for a change.

If you ticked all the right boxes, maybe stuff is going into your spam folder? That's where bills mysteriously disappear to sometimes when I need a bit more time to pay them

That's good that's working now . It this was a recent change, it may be that you had e-mail notifications turned on for "watched" threads, but threads were not "watched" by default.
