Any idea what is happening here

This is the only place on my 3/4 acre that has these brown patches. They have been like this for about three weeks when we had some hot dry weather but the rest of the lawn came back fine.
Do you think someone threw something on it?
I have watered several times and even gave it some miracle grow.

Is it just along the roadway? if so, it could be some type of contamination. Gas, oil buildup, salt treatment from winter.

The phrase "the rest of the lawn came back fine" caught my eye. if the whole lawn was drying out from lack of water, then likely these areas near the edge dried the most, perhaps dried to death.

Check for pests in the soil. Minor issues that are not normally a problem can breakout when the grass is stressed. You may need to call in an expert. We have had similar issues with our lawn. Our lawn treatment company showed us what was wrong and fixed it. It was very difficult to see the bugs even when the tech showed me.
