I was browsing thru the internet a while go and found this interesting story, I thought it was amazing a mule would ever have a reaction like that! Very courageous!

Here in Texas, many sheep and goat ranchers keep a donkey or mule with them to protect against coyotes. They can be quite vicious when their "friends" are threatened

Mules are much underrated. Smarter than horses, and stronger; don't take any guff from humans (or mountain lions); and if you treat them well they live long and useful lives. My granddaddy broke mules to harness for farmers, and he instilled a respect for them in his sons.
Sure wish I had a pair of mules! Thank you for sharing that story.

Wow, I had no idea either. I almost feel sorry for the mountain lion; as an apex predator I bet he didn't expect that.

You are welcome :) Thanks a lot for sharing that bit of story too, I must admit I knew nothing about mules until now! They indeed are smarter than horses if they can do this kind of things, no wonder your grandfather respected them so much!

Do this kind of things happen often over there? My grandpa had a mule, but it didn't seem as awesome as this one, I must say I no fear and respect mules even more.

What a protective mule and a smart one too! I didn't think that mule can be that aggressive going after a lion!

It happens more often than one would think. In this part of Texas there are a lot of coyotes. Some of the sheep and goat ranchers use Great Pyrenees dogs as their guardians but most use mules or donkeys because they don't have to go out every day and feed them. The mules just graze along with their sheep buddies and require very little care.

Thanks for the info, Chuck! I think I have heard it all now, I had no idea mules were used instead of dogs by ranchers to take care of their sheep and goats! That means mules are so much smarter than I thought. Thanks to this post I now see mules in a different way, totally different!

Like any other animal, mules also have their instincts for survival. But sometimes animals display compassion for other animals even in the wild. And an animal killing an animal for the sake of another animal is not a rare thing but not ordinary either. However, the photos would tell the entire story and I’m sure anyone who sees those photos will surely be amazed because the photos are really amazing.

That is an amazing story Trellum, it does show a side of mules most of us don't know about. Lucky dog and couple.

Well, apparently mules are way smarter than horses, and have seem to develop to sense of loyalty to its owners if treated right. That to me is really extraordinary, specially if a mule is willing to face a wild animal that is as dangerous as a mountain lion or a puma.

Wpw, you really think so? That would need some sort of deeper reasoning coming from the mule. But who knows, maybe they are that smart, after all they are much smarter than horses or so I heard.

Yeah :) I think that couple must have treated that mule very well :)
