Hi all,

Looking for advice on saving my sickly bromeliad. It’s got dry white patches near the top or on the tip of several fronds, and brown spots around the base.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Greetings, welcome to the Forums.

It looks like this Bromeliad (Bromeliaceae) either got overly dry and/or was suddenly exposed to stronger light than it was accustomed to. Either way, it ended up with some scorch marks on its leaves. However, overall it looks like a healthy plant, and it will eventually grow new leaves to replace or hide the damaged ones. The brown marks at the base might also only be minor scrapes or aging. The more purplish ones are part of the plant's natural pigment.

This looks like possibly an Alcantarea or Vriesea. Do you know which species or hybrid this might be?

Hi Marck,

Thanks so much for the prompt reply. Sorry, I inherited the plant and as a novice plant owner, have no idea what sort of species/hybrid it is. In terms of watering, I’m conscious of avoiding overwatering. Any idea how often I should give it a drink?

Cheers.

This is a tank bromeliad so always keep some water in the central tank.
As for the potting media, let it partly dry out before irrigating again, but no need to let it get completely dry.

As for sunlight, many bromeliads can take sun or bright shade. They do color more nicely in the sun, but when moving any plant from shade to sun do it gradually or during cool, cloudy weather.

Thanks for the advice, Marck. You’ve been a huge help
