Hi Everyone,

I am just south of Houston and have been "trying" to grow my own veggies for years. Some, I do VERY well with and some I d do not. We do great with peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, watermelons, cantaloupes and such. I really struggle with corn, lettuce (better in the fall), carrots, potatoes, onions and such. I am finally seeing that I need to be planting in the middle of winter! Our asparagus plants never lost their tops this year it was so warm. I actually had to go and cut them back in order to get a harvest! Of course, now they are producing literally overnight so I am thrilled!

We are in Zone 9a BTW.

Cheers
Chris

Welcome! We are in central Texas zone 8b. I love gardening in Texas (after one learns what does well here and what doesn't). We plant carrots, spinach, onions, lettuce, and turnips in the fall, and again in early spring. Garlic goes into the garden in October, and we harvest in June. Your schedule may be a bit different, but Texas A&M has a great "when to plant what" guide that I've found helpful.
http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/archives/parsons/earthkind/ekgarden14.html is the spring planting guide, but they also have a fall guide.

:)A warm welcome to you Chris. You can put your zone underneath your profile avatar so people will know what climate you are dealing with when you ask questions and such. Take a look @Sheal s info above this post for an example of that, or my info, for that matter:rolleyes:
