Ever since I was a young kid I liked the great singers of the 40s and 50s. Guys like Frank Sinatra, Perry Como and even Dean Martin. The orchestration and vocals from those people still sound wonderful. I also had a crush on Dinah Shore. She had a great voice and was such a happy person. I still love to spend an afternoon with the headphones on listening to that era of music.
A lot of ex-big band singers had rewarding careers in the fifties and early sixties.
There were some great songs for them to sing. Some I find quite emotive.
Like this one, by Jo Stafford. She was originally the lead singer of "The Pied Pipers" Tommy Dorsey's Band's vocal group.
Over a million have listened to it on YouTube.
It was featured in the first series of "A Place to Call Home," when they were using all contemporary original recordings, that suited and enhanced the scene over which they were played.
This went out the window in series two, when the used mostly naff covers and "the magic was lost."
