Well we have a patch of moss in our garden and I know it was there last spring+summer but cannot remember if there was any in the winter.. do they stay in the winter? If not, are they perennials and come back in the warmer seasons?

Look at the tundra in Canada. There's moss everywhere. I guess it all depends on what type of moss it is

Yes it depends on the type of moss. It will keep coming back if it is in a permanently shaded moist area, perennial or annual, sun kills moss.

I have a friend who recently bought a house with some big patches of moss in his shady front yard. I tried talking him into leaving it (hey it is green!) but he bought something that killed it off because he is a perfect-lawn type person.

Interesting question! I think they will come back after the winter.
