So for years I've been trying to grow large amounts of dill to go with pickles. I put down lots of seeds (100-200) but only get maybe a dozen or so plants.

The plants I do get don't seem to produce much either though they do get tall, 3ft.

I've been looking into ways to increase productivity but I'm not finding much at all. Though one thing that occurred to me is that maybe I'm just letting the plants grow too much. Should I be trimming it back to keep it in the 1ft range?

Note, i generally try to grow fernleaf dill but have tried other variety.

Fernleaf dill is a lovely plant, and I favor it to put in salads. However, it is not as prolific nor as strong flavored as the old, non-hybridized types. I plant Ducat dill and harvest it as needed. Let a plant or two go to seed, and you'll have another crop of dill next season.
