Chestnut graft failure

A chestnut (Castanea sativa) that I grafted succesfully last year (also using castanea sativa scions) appears to be failing this spring! It was a bark (rind) graft and




was doing great

all last summer. Anyone know what went wrong? Pictures here:

I'm not an expert, but if you match phloem, xylem, and cambium, stem sizes, the grafts will take better and last longer.

Thanks oneeye. I did try to do all those things. I guess sometimes grafts fail. I do have some that are doing better. Also as you said it is also a question of the graft lasting longer. Actually few sites follow up sufficiently on grafts - they simply show the great results a year or two after grafting! Thanks again.
