Carnation with white spots

Any general tips on taking care of carnations? Like pruning, winter care etc. They are such lovely flowers. Any reason why they have white spots on them?

The spots could be a bit of damage from thrips. These are easy plants to care for generally, and apart from taking off the dead blooms to encourage new buds they don't usually need too much attention really. New cuttings root easily. I usually plant out bits of any that I get in a bunch from the florists (or occasionally have bought for me if I'm lucky)
