Avocado tree leaves are turning brown

Hello everyone I am new to gardening and my Nana gave my an avocado tree and it appears to be pretty sick and I think something is eating the leaves too. Can someone help me identify the problem and a solution please! I would be devastated if it died but I don’t know what I’m doing at all! Thank you!! (I live in Florida I’m not sure how relevant that is)

Very gently tip the plant out of the container and get a look a the roots. When you take a look feel the center and see if it's too wet or too dry. If your roots are white and not brown or black, put your plant under a shade tree for a few days. It may be a goner.

Does the pot have a hole in the bottom?
