Does anyone know how long it takes to grow an apple tree to the point in which it produces fruit? I have always wanted to grow one from a seed, but do not know if it is worth the effort.

I don't think it's worth the effort. You would have to wait many years for the fruits and there is a big possibility that they wouldn't be too tasty. Apple trees need to be grafted.
In my opinion it's much easier to buy a small tree, they aren't very expensive.

It would take quite awhile, they aren't the fastest growing trees in the garden. Still, plant the seed and watch it grow for fun, it would be neat to see one grow from a seed.

Could take years. Planting a tree from seed takes long enough, let alone the time it takes to bear fruit. Even buying a tree that is already grown up can require a lot patience! If you have the patience, then good for you! But bear in mind you will have to wait quite a bit.
