I have had fair luck trying to grow deciduous trees from seeds. I find the best way is to bury them under some leaves in the yard during the fall and cover them with a screen cage. Trying to stratifying seeds in the refrigerator and then potting them has never resulted in satisfactory results. The reason I am stating this is once again nature has humiliated me. A couple weeks ago I took my squash seed trays out of the greenhouse and sat them in the garden to harden them off. This week I went to check on them and saw a “weed” growing between two of the plants. I removed it and saw that it was attached to a Maple seed helicopter. I had a little pot so I stuck it in the pot and now it is turning into a beautiful little maple. I never cease to be amazed by nature.

We've got Box Elder trees in the neighborhood, and nature grows hundreds of them in my gardens every year. Since it's a fast-growing specie, I ended up keeping one and moving it to the backyard. It's got a thick stem and is growing fast in year three.
