I thought I had small banana trees when I was digging them up in my boyfriend's back yard but as they grew I see the leaves are growing straight from the stalk and not from a stem which doesn't look like my banana tree. Can someone tell me what I have?

Where in the US do you live? That would help towards identifying your plant. I'm guessing somewhere warm...I'm in Michigan and don't recognise it.

It looks like a ginger plant of some kind.

The shape and habit of the leaves reminds me most of the Garland Gingers in the genus Hedychium.
