I have been purchasing seeds so that I can plant my vegetable and flower gardens next week when I am off work. I am doing all of my planting in pots. What are some vegetables that do not grow well in pots because of room constraints or other factors? I guess pumpkins would be an obvious one :notworthy:

Anything can be grown in a pot provided the proper conditions are met. For the best success, you should always purchase seed for varieties of vegetables that are meant for container growing such as bush cucumber and patio tomatoes.

I noticed that some of the seed packets I bought had pictures of pots on them with check marks in the middle, so I am assuming that means these are ok for pot gardening. I am headed back to Lowe's today to get some more items I need like soil and a couple of more pots. This is going to be so much fun!

Make sure you get a potting mix and not garden soil.

I used garden soil one year because I didn't have the money for potting soil. The only difference I noticed was the weight of the pot, my plants fair no better in potting soil.

I've heard that is possible to grow almost any kind of veggie in a pot, no limitations as long as you get enough info on what the best way to grow each vegetable in a pot it.. There are so many online manuals and other useful info bits, I personally love Pinterest for that... I've found some really interesting things there.

Everyone's garden/microclimate is different. Mixes with soil - which generally means some clay, are more dense and can contribute to disease and root rot of some plants.

Anything can be grown in a pot. Some varieties are specifically made (not the right word) for pots, containers and small spaces. And soil has a lot to do with how successful you are in growing everything. Along with sunlight, shade and the dreaded diseases and all the other good stuff. Microclimate is a good word and a good way to describe it. (y)

If you are growing in pots, try to get the "bush" type of vegetables. There are cucumbers, squash, tomatoes, peppers, all sorts that are "bush" and not vining. Just off the top of my head, I'd think that corn won't grow well in containers, and possibly okra.
If you can find a construction site where the workers are finishing off a building, ask if you can have some of the 5 gal. spackel buckets for free. They aren't particularly pretty, but serve as planters, with a few holes poked in the bottom. Just rinse them out well, poke or drill a few holes in the bottom, and start filling with garden soil/compost or whatever mix you prefer.

I see no reason any plant will not grow in a pot. It would be better for the plant to be a bush type as opposed to a vine that wants to run, but if you have fence they can travel along that would work also.

Although some plants may not fruit quite as abundantly when grown in a pot compared to when they are grown in the open ground - I really don't think that there is anything - apart from maybe asparagus which may be a bit problematic - that can't be grown in a pot - especially as almost all vining plants will happily grow over almost anything you give them to climb over and many can be grown as hanging plants too :)

I bought planter corn this year. It's going to be great because I'm going to grow a mess of corn in the planter, harvest it, and have a ready made corn stock for fall decorating! I might even make a scare crow this year with the kiddo! I'm so excited for gardening this year!
