I had a trumpet vine that was twelve years old. This spring it bloomed again like it has for the last 8 or 9 years. Beautiful. Then about three weeks ago, 1st of September, the leaves started turning yellow. I fertilized. Got worse. Suddenly all the leaves fell off and the trunks which were 1 to 1 1/2” in diameter were also DEAD. We all know how trumpet vines can be invasive, well, there are several little vines popping up in the area of the dead vine. Can anyone shed any light on this mysterious death. What did I do or didn’t do. This vine was affording me a lot of shade on my southwest facing back porch and now it is gone. Thanks.

Maybe there are some ground critters munching on the roots. I had similar experience and it was due to moles,
this year they attacked the grapes vines over 20 years old. New vines popping up , hopefully the traps set for the moles will protect the rest of the grape vines. Even mice and voles can attack the roots.
hope your trumpet vine recovers. The deer around here like the trumpet vines so I put out plantskyyd and blocked the entrance to that area. It’s always something.🥴

Thanks for you time to reply. I don’t think that I have any underground critters but I will certainly double check. Thanks for giving me that advice.

I would remove some dirt around the roots and see what's happening. I wouldn't fertilize a plant that needs little fertilizer once the leaves start to actually brown and fall off. If they're just yellowing a bit, yes, but once the plant shows as much stress as to brown, no. It can't utilize that fertilizer when it's stressed and it can further harm the roots.

You have suckers coming up so by next summer you'll have a lot more growth no matter what happens. Trumpet vines will keep on growing no matter what.

Thanks for that sage advice. I had fertilized when the leaves first yellowed. The leaves just yellowed and fell off, never turned brown. The suckers coming up are 6-7 feet from the main plant so they will not be of any benefit unless I tried transplanting. I would rather go buy a healthy plant at the nursery. I am leaning toward Confederate Jasmin as a replacement. Thanks again for taking the time to reply and for your knowledgeable insight

You could easily transplant it if you wanted and it would look, IMHO, quite nice growing with the jasmine or along a fence, or up a tree.

Well as I turned out I have three Baby vines coming up from the roots of the mamma plant. So they are along my porch and I can train them up to the railing and that will work out. Add some new trellis and I get the shade. last night somr deer came along and ate about a foot off one of best preferred located vine. I just might have a venison roast for Thanksgiving. lol
