Mystery black somethings? On trumpet plant

I noticed over the winter my backyard trumpet plant started getting these black ball/egg-like things and I have no clue what they could be. In the fall I found 1 small green caterpillar or inch worm but it was just eating the leaves. Any ideas what this could be?

Aphids. They are not all green, there are black ones as well.

What you see is excrement from either an insect or a caterpillar. It's probably from a caterpillar called a leaf roller caterpillar.
