The local community bar was so sure that their bartender was the strongest in the county that they offered a standing £1000 bet. The bartender would squeeze a lemon until all the juice ran into a glass, then hand the lemon to any patron who thought they could do more. Anyone who could squeeze one more drop of juice from the lemon would win the money.

Many people had tried over the course of time; weightlifters, longshoremen, tough guys, farmers, lumberjacks and iron workers - even some women. Nobody could do it. No one could attain the local challenge.

Then one day, a scrawny looking, slightly older gentleman came into the bar, wearing thick glasses and a polyester suit. He ordered a drink. He studied the open challenge of the lemon squeeze. Then in a small voice said, "I'd like to try it."

After some shocked expression and the odd eye roll, the bartender said, "OK, let’s do it’. He grabbed a lemon from under the counter and squeezed away with all his might.

After he was finished, he handed the wrinkled remains of the lemon rind to the little guy. But the crowd's laughter and doubt suddenly turned to silence and amazement .... as the man clenched his little fist around the lemon.

Behold, six more drops fell into the glass!

As the crowd cheered, the bartender in disbelief paid out the £1000.

He then congratulated the little guy and stated ‘compliments from the bar’ as he refreshed the little guy’s drink with another.

Then he asked the little man: "What do you do for a living? You certainly don’t like a lumberjack, a weight-lifter, or even a general labourer…."

“I work for the Inland Revenue."
