This only happened once, so far, and the bees created a heart in my sunflower

Wow you already have heads in Penn! Nice. Here in zone 8b/9a we don't have any blooms yet but expect some soon.

There is a joker somewhere near us who likes to do that to the sunflowers grown on our local farm

The sunflowers here are not ''trap crops'' they are grown for their seeds, they are rich in vitamin E and antioxidants. The birds enjoy them too.
It is interesting that they should also be used in this way though, and companion planting can clearly be used for the purpose of safeguarding other crops. Nature, left alone, without our interference has an answer for all of the problems, if only we would allow it.
There is so much to applaud about gardening organically.

i have been learning and writing about trap crops including sunflowers.
I have been using them for trap crops for many years...thought I was the only one, :giggle:

They are especially adept at trapping "stink" bugs away from your tomatoes and squash plants.
