The missus planted out my runner beans while I was in Hospital. Most were scarlet emperor, one St George, and one cobra French bean, but late on I got four pods low down that turned bright red when they ripened. Now I have picked them the beans inside are about half the size of runners, and a sort of mottled grey colour. Anybody any idea of what they are? Don't know how they got there, I don't remember planting anything like that.

The "Bingo" bean that I grow turns bright red/pink when it ripens...but they are larger than most green beans.

It was only the outside pod that was red, and when they ripened fully they went brown like the runners. I have saved them and will grow some next year if I can. From the way that they were only low down I wondered if they may not have been a climbing bean.
They turned an all over, even , bright red, no pink. Not Bingo I think, though they sound good.

Interesting Oliver.

I grow Bridgwater beans which can have different coloured beans even in the same pod, haven't got a pic of them handy but there were speckled and then plain brown ones next to each other.

If yours are on a separate plant then I'd be concerned that they were a totally different bean that had got in there and be worried about the toxicity. Some beans can make you ill if not cooked right and if they've got any sweet pea genes in there they can give you Lathyrism, as can chick peas too

I wonder if there was a red swan tucked away in the packet?
It certainly looked like them. I am surprised I didn't notice the difference when I was planting seeds, its seeds looks completely different from the runners, but maybe I simply assumed it was a bit stunted and planted it anyway on the off chance.

Not too worried, didn't resemble sweet pea at all. They tell me I shouldn't eat chick peas or too much of other things with vitamin K as it suppresses the Warfarin I take to suppress clotting. Should get on to a new drug soon where it won't matter, which, as a veggie who loves chick peas and greens, will be good.
