I planted my red onions at the same time as my white onions. In the same soil, same amount of water and sun. But my white onions are growing twice as fast as my reds. I don't know the variant of red. Got the sets on a whim. Normally only grow vadalia. But decided to go for some color too. And thanks for the replies.

Travis, I have no idea where you are, but here in Texas white and yellow onions grow better than reds. That doesn't stop me from planting reds, I just don't expect as large a harvest, nor as large onions. Perhaps that is why reds are more expensive in the grocery?

In Texas short day onions are what you plant. Of the white and yellow onions there are a bunch of them. Of the red I think there are 3 of them, Red Burgandy, Red Creole and Red Southern Belle. None of them grow as well as the white and yellow varieties.
