Have you pulled the shrub out of the pot. Look for roots that show signs of root damage -brown , s/b. White roots. Or root bound. Or if the sun is not baking the roots in the pot. if roots are ok and a larger pot is not needed It may be that it’s fall and cooler weather which can make the leaves turn yellow and fall . That’s normal for these shrubs . I have had a couple for many years planted in the ground they grow very large. Easy care of any other plants in my garden . As long as they have good drainage and never over watered plenty of room for the roots they are a tough and beautiful shrub. I’ve never seen any insect problems with them .
Once established they are winter hardy and drought tolerent. They are a wonderful shrub with tons of flowers early spring.
If possible it might be better for the plant to planted in the ground before winter.

thanks, and sorry for the delay in replying. i'm not here as often as i'd like to be. no, i haven't taken it out of the pot. i'll make sure i've got a big enough pot to repot it in if it needs it. there doesn't seem to be any further yellowing, so that's good. i'm not sure about the drainage, i can look at that when i take it out to look at the roots. unfortunately i don't have any ground to plant it in. ooh, that's exciting, i'm looking forward to the flowers.
