Dear All,
I have a question about my 6 Carpinus Betulus Lucas trees.
Since we did not prune the trees last autumn, they were pretty bushy early spring this year. They were pruned last Tuesday (top, front and back), perhaps a bit too early in spring.
Now I have noticed since the pruning that the leaves are discolouring/fading. I watered the trees last Friday (3 days after pruning), and Monday. The soil is very dry. I live in the south of the Netherlands. So no rainfall for a long time, lots of sun and a daily breeze. Every day I see the leaves deteriorating. Someone suggested that it is probably leaf burn, due to the weather conditions and the recent pruning.
Does anyone indeed recognise this as leaf burn due to sun/wind? And if so, how long does this leaf burn process continue? I am familiar with the fact that pruning in sunny weather causes plants to wither, I can see that elsewhere in my garden with other plants as well. But there I see that the bleaching process does not get worse every day, but it does with these trees. It starts with pale discolourations either in the veins or on the leaf edge. From the leaf edge the bleaching spreads further inwards and with the leaves that wither along the veins, this fishtale pattern becomes wider every day. Leaves that were still green yesterday already have a starting edge today. I see that the withering also occurs with the young small leaves.
Tips or experiences with similar problems are more than welcome!
