I am curious at what height everyone cuts their lawn. The standard for bluegrass/fescue is around 3 inches but I know people who live in different areas have to mow at different heights.

I have been mowing the same lawn for 20 years so I have a system worked out to make my life easy. I usually start around 2-2.5" in the spring and raise when it gets warmer.

I burn my grass off in the spring
I keep it short until it gets hot then I start letting it grow taller

We have a mix of St. Augustine and Bermuda, and we try to keep it at 3". I really loathe St. Augustine grass--coarse looking, you can trip on the runners, and it invades flower beds. However, it doesn't need mowing as often as the Bermuda!

I think my parents did about 3 inches. My dad wasn't always on top of mowing the long though, so sometimes it got too tall and then there was too much lying on top when it got mowed. I have heard that maintaining a shorter height helps with reducing watering needs somewhat.

I like my grass height high so I'd say the highest notch on the lawnmower. My huband used to cut it down so low and the sun would ruin it. Once it grew back and I set the notch as high as it would go he saw the difference and liked it better.

MrsJones, same here, I like my grass high too. My lawn looks very wild, in my opinion it's pretty and interesting:) I don't remember the last time it was mowed.

My lawn is always kept my lawn at about 3 inches when I lived in a house and had to do my own lawn care. Now we have people who come and cut our grass and they keep it about 3 inches as well. I think that is the standard.

My neighbor had sod placed years before he died and it grows very fast. The new owner cuts it down very low to alleviate having to cut it so much. That's why I'm considering getting sod for my backyard. I'm hoping for the same effect but I won't cut it low.

We keep ours 2-3 inches on average. Its a mix of whatever grass seed was thrown down over the years and some weeds but its thick and green so I dont worry about it. I focus my time and energy on the veggies, fruits and flower beds and could honestly care less about the grass. Every year I expand the beds a bit and end up with less lawn to deal with

as high as we can, so that the cut only takes a third of it off, leaving 2/3rds to grow. It works well, but you cut less off, more often. I will also let it go a bit, if it is really hot or dry too long.

We keep it at about 3-3.5 inches. I know that's kind of high, but I just love the way it looks at that height. Of course, in the spring and fall, there are times we have to mow the grass 2 or 3 times a week.

But I actually enjoy mowing the lawn. I listen to my iPod (see my avatar!!) and just mellow out and enjoy my surroundings - and it looks so pretty when I'm finished.
