Good afternoon folks

We've got one of these in our front garden:-

I'm just wondering if anyone can confirm this is what Google lens is suggesting and, if so, if they have any understanding of how it's come in this year with that big bare patch to the lower left.

It's not evergreen, so we're left with the whole thing looking "twiggy" like that section you can see.

I cut it back on those dead woodish looking bits before spring came along but for some reason that bit has just remained bare.

Is there some kind of specific pruning I should be doing with this plant to ensure it comes in as best as possible?

Thanks.

Take your finger and bend the wood and if it breaks its dead and needs to be removed. No need to keep dead wood on any plant.

Thanks.

I bent quite a few earlier and yeah, they all broke.

But the funny thing is I'm pretty sure the whole lower part of the plant was like that before it started coming back.

Anyway, I'll cut it back later but I guess that's it for that patch until next year.
