Hello and Happy new year to you all.

I’ve purchased this 1.5 year old tree in the pot and planted last week.
It has two main trunks that starts about 0.5m from the ground and carries on the one of the trunks splits again.
Do I need to prune it or not ?
Any advice appreciated
Planted .1.1.2025
1.5 year old tree
Location -Tenerife

Thanks in advance, any tips appreciated

A lemon plant grows naturally into a bush, not a tree. If you want a single trunked tree then snip off the weakest of the two stems. If not, leave it alone. As the plant grows taller the two trunks will start to grow apart or you can manually start to separate them now. Years down the road the base of the two stems will probably fuse together but by this time you probably won't be able to see it as both stems will be a separate bush.

Thanks.

And I would pick one to keep and remove the other. The point where they separate will be weak and any extra weight on either one can split them apart, at which point you will have to choose one or start all over. Choose now to reduce damage in the future. If the angle were wider I would leave it, but I’ve seen lots of split trunks that could have been avoided by a simple snip.

It looks like to me you planted your lemon tree too deep in the ground and too close to the stone wall. If the tree gets 6 to 8 hours of full sun during the growing season it will be ok.

Hi, it should get about 6 hours per day, should I leave it like that or dig it up and put some soil underneath?
