Can a snapped seedling sprout a leaf?

I ordered a few small maple seedlings on etsy (of all places), and when they arrived, 2 were ok but 1 had its stem broken off. So its about 4 inches tall but with no leaves. The leaf bundle was sitting loose in the box.

So I contacted the seller and I'm hoping they can just send me a replacement.

HOWEVER After planting the two good ones, I planted the little stump anyway. I've seen trees cut down before, that start sprouting out of their trunk. I'm wondering if there is any chance this thing might sprout a new leaf, which could then lead to more leaves and a trees thats back on track growing normally? Ir is the thing just dead? If its dead, its not that big a deal, I'll just replace it.

Also the 'trunk' is way too small for me to try to tape the thing back together. Its a twig if that.

Here's some hope for you, I008com:
Every year we get what seems like 20-zillion little maple trees sprouting in the lawn. When I mow, they get cut off and nothing's left but the stem.

I'll be darned if most, if not all, of them generate new leaves and grow!

Well it looks like the seller has no more plants so they can't send me a replacement. So here's hoping that little guy makes a surprise comeback!
