Banana plant dying

Hello all, I am new to gardening and inherited a big banana plant for outdoor living, after unwrapping at beginning of april, the plant is just brown and lifeless, Precious own said to water once a week or twice a week when hot, but i think it's dead. Any advice woudl be so helpful, thank you
